Everything Wrong with TNA Impact (and how it should have been) (in my mind) (03/08/12)

RECAP OF GARRETT FEUD (not enough Gunner)
Not enough Gunner, way too much Garrett. I’m dreading what tonight will entail. Gunner arrives in his jeep. He is different from anyone else. Little jeep, big sunglasses, a plaid hick shirt and giant sideburns, but with that being said I don’t want him in the role he’s in. Gunner however is awesome.

GUNNER, BISCHOFF & FLAIR PROMO (and glaring issues)
Flair’s music is played. Well a different and less dramatic version of his music. Anyone remember when Bischoff & Flair hated each other? Maybe it’s just me, but I think Gunner doesn’t need 2 white haired managers. He just needs one of them. Oh and wait where’s Chelsea? It doesn’t matter, she’s pretty useless. That’s like giving a one night escort a name. Flair is looking like a corpse over the past few years.

So they set up a tag match with Gunner & Garrett. A high end wrestler throws his hat into the ring metaphorically. That elevates Gunner, but belittles the wrestler that appears. Hey if you want Garrett to look good, you put him in there with the best. So who is it? Kurt Angle who has gone on a tear about his kids over the past year or so he knows the value of a father being disrespected by his son.

STING BACKSTAGE w/ ERIC YOUNG
Wow the closeup made him look old. He is putting on his makeup and talking to a mirror. Eric Young appears. I think TNA knows how stupid Sting is, so they sent in Eric Young, their comedy guy. A match is set, Eric Young & ODB vs the tag champs. Not the TNA tag titles, the knockout tag titles. Sting goes back to giggling in the mirror.

KNOCKOUTS TAG TITLES >> ERIC YOUNG & ODB vs GAIL & RAYNE (surprisingly entertaining)
This match makes sense since ODB has had singles matches with Gail & Rayne and Eric has been in the background. Rayne & Kim look like tag partners since they have matching colors and that’s literally all it takes. Oh good a knockouts tag match with Eric Young. I fully expect Eric to lockup with the ref half a dozen times. Over the years Eric has really been the guy to work with the women… or not work with the women.

ODB is still heavily over just like the previous 2 weeks. In fact she gets such a reaction from the crowd that she should be the world champion. Eric Young’s spots were actually good and entertaining this week. He wanted a bronco buster. He dodges run ins from the knockouts, a stacked airplane spin and complete with a falling rape pin attempt.

ERIC YOUNG PROPOSAL to ODB
It’s a little early for that. What’s it the 3rd month of their tag team? Eh, whatever. They can have a long engagement. This is probably the sort of thing they should have KAZ & Traci Brooks do years ago. Crowd loved it.

JOSEPH PARK ARRIVES
He is here to look at management… He looks to be quite the character.

BULLY RAY BACKSTAGE
Not as entertaining. He’s putting on a serious face.

AUSTINARIES BACKSTAGE
Austingets an email from Sting on what looks to be a blackberry. Sting wants Zema Ion vs Aries tonight. Aries questions Sting’s logic to have the match tonight. I smell a title change and a face turn for Aries.

X-DIVISION TITLE >> AUSTIN ARIES vs ZEMA ION (and the look)
I love Zema’s trashy look. Terrible tights, terrible afro and spraying that bottle make it an awesome look. Austin Aries is a gorgeous magician. It is all about the look. Great facial hair, he just needs a top hat and a wand.

Good stall tactics by Aries celebrating around the ringside.  Puts a unique flair on him and this match has tons of flair from flashy moves to hairstyles. Even the hairspray looks awesome, because it’s covered with magazine beauty shots. I guess it’s a fair way to end a TV match, but this just means they should put a stipulation on their PPV match. Ladder match? Hairspray on a pole match?

VELVET & JOSEPH PARKS
Mr. Parks is Abyss’s brother. That’s why Joseph has an impressive appearance.

CALF-ZILLA PROMO (a stipulation is really needed)
He’s the guy that did this and that to James Storm. Their match at the PPV will be a #1 contenders match for Lockdown, even though James Storm is the #1 contender at Lockdown. After he beat Bully Ray. What will be different? What stipulation will make this match different than the last time?

Sting appears… he’s all crazy. Yep Sting is crazy alright. Sting looks like Raul Julia from Adams Family Values since his makeup is over his eyes and he has a mustache. Oh good and it’s after the break.

ROODE vs BULLY (a wasted money match)
Again… Roode, Storm, Hardy, Bully and Angle are your money guys. You do not have them on free TV facing one another. You have them against lesser guys. Anyway this match has been built up a lot better than Roode vs Storm so why not give it away on free TV? We just had one heel vs heel match, why not have another back to back? The crowd is rowdy in a good way.

After a few minutes, Storm appears to chase out Bully Ray… then not care about Roode until he stands up. Storm gives Roode the Last Call and lays the title on him. I think Roode & Storm have touched way too much for me to give a damn about their match. In fact TNA knows the only way to get heat on this match is promise a title change. I don’t want to see someone in your main event of next PPV laid out. Why do I want to watch Sting beat someone when I just saw him laid out 2 weeks in a row?

TNA LIVE EVENT COMMERCIAL (and how counterproductive is)
Fan buries why go to an Impact taping when someone will put up a sign in your face and you won’t meet the superstars? Plug the fact you meet the wrestlers, but don’t bury your TV tapings.

CRIMMORGAN BACKSTAGE (with Joseph Parks)
Joe is looking for his brother who’s his brother? Crimmorgan have issues as a team. Whatever.

ROBBIE E & ROB TERRY vs CRIMMORGAN (and various bad tacked on elements)
Feels like a tag division is brewing. Robbie E & Rob Terry appear in matching pink sweaters? What’s the logic behind that? I know their heels, but it just felt tacked on and stupid. Speaking of tacked on Mike Tennay needs to remind us of Crimson & Morgan’s history as competitors beating the hell out of one another and then they are paired as a tag team. I think they only had 2 singles matches in the span of 2 months. They had a few with Joe mixed in there too.

Wow this match has a lot of meat in it. If anything this match makes Terry and Robbie E look good. Frequent tags, Terry does power spots, Robbie E does quick spots. It’s everything that Morgan and Crimson should have been doing 3 months ago and everything Mexican America should have done. Morgan looked good when he got the hot tag too. Good finish, I just don’t like where this team is headed since TNA needs teams and these 2 should be killing the tag division and not arguing. Tennay announces CrimMorgan vs JoNus Brothers atVictory Road, making 5 matches in 3 months. No one should have that many matches. That’s what singles matches and 3 ways are for.

KURT ANGLE & GUNNER BACKSTAGE (senseless promo)
Kurt just recaps… Kurt’s eyebrows twitch purposely. Tennay and Tazz could have just thrown up a graphic the match is still to come.

AJ / KAZ / DANIELS RECAP
Thank god they recapped this, because it makes no sense and still makes no sense.

AJ STYLEZ PROMO interrupted by KAZANIELS
Yep another and I bet he wants answers. He informs the crowd that the 10th anniversary is coming and I couldn’t be more sad for a guy who’s been with the company since day 1 to be stuck in the mud like this. Saddled with something that could have fantastic matches, but the logic behind them makes no sense. He reminds fans of some terrible angles before KAZ & Daniels show up.

Daniels says AJ got fame and Daniels got fired. Oooo KAZ calls AJ transparent and predictable and puts trust in the wrong people. Maybe that’s AJ’s fault and not their’s. I’m still waiting for it to make sense or maybe it makes sense and I just don’t care because they’ve teased this for weeks. Why not just say AJ got Daniels and KAZ fired both. Or do that TV title idea that I’ve mentioned for a month.

Oh fuck Kennedy is back. Now I really don’t care. He just steals the thunder of this terrible angle.

GARRETT & HARDY vs ANGLE & GUNNER (killing all heat for Angle vs Hardy)
Uggg. Again Angle vs Hardy is a money match and having them touch in 2 tag matches in the past 3 weeks doesn’t make me want to see a singles match. Hardy is TNA’s ratings man supposedly, so this main even should do well compared to last week’s 6 man tag that didn’t have him. You can still have Hardy in a match, you can have Angle in a match, just not the same match, but then I guess that wouldn’t mean you’d piggyback Garrett on Hardy & Angle.

Hardy comes out shambling like a ghoul. Like I’ve said before he’s not a wrestler just a performance artist. Gunner gets an anti gunner chant even before he’s tagged in. That’s heat. The crowd this week was great with chanting and rowdiness.

Garrett gets the hot tag and he’s really sloppy. So sloppy that TNA needs to cut to different angles. He’s pretty wild out there. When he stands his arms flail out. Good finish that made sense, but now I don’t need to watch either match at the PPV.

IN CONCLUSION (zero heat forVictory Road)
Andersonvs Daniels is announced. I’m wonder when the PPV is. TNA really fails at plugging their pay-per-views. You had your world champion main eventer get laid out earlier. You had your X-Division pay-per-view match for free. You had a tag match that killed all heat for your #3 PPV match. But hey it’s only the 3rd match from the top, why am I nitpicking? Oh and on your PPV you’ll have a tag title match that we’ve seen 5x in the past 3 months. TNA is really betting on Sting… but if Sting goes over someone that was laid out 2x in as many weeks does that really mean anything?

Everything wrong with TNA Impact and how it should have been (in my mind) (11/10/11)

New TNA champion Roode came out… as a full fledged heel. That seems a little iffy. Just boom he’s a heel now. He didn’t do it and everyone else would do the same deep down if they saw a brass ring and saw stepping over their best friend, their partner for their own glory they’d do the same and that’s why you’ll boo me now.

Having Storm go out was a little silly but acceptable. They really should have had him take time off saying he had a concussion and had AJ Stylez challenge him to the pay-per-view for Fortune. Or KAZ wants revenge too. Roode says how bad do you want it? Go through the other and I’ll give you a title shot. Just like I had to do leading up to Bound for Glory.

Garrett Bischoff… he looks like a wrestler. But having his first meh match on national television. Personally I think they could have done Gunner vs Garrett… but do it in 3 months with 3 months of 1 minute training vignettes with Garrett at wrestling school. Then have his match on pay-per-view…  Bischoff can interfere and cost his son the match. Then they all beat him down and send him packing of a year where he gets proper training in OVW.

Jersey Shore. Having Jersey Shore Ronnie and Garrett debut on the same show when they’re both very limited felt the same… Ronnie was minimized which was good. But now suddenly Robbie E gets a TV title shot for losing a match after he lost a match makes little sense. Wow this match should have been on pay-per-view. Granted Robbie E vs EY will be a better match, but maybe they shouldn’t have jobbed out Robbie E to EY. Maybe instead Rob Terry interferes for the DQ, then EY brings in Ronnie. Then they do the tag match… with Rob Terry taking the pinfall and then Robbie vs EY with Ronnie in his corner. His enforcer. Then he pops Rob Terry at the pay-per-view and EY pins Robbie. Bada-bing!

Crimson…. He needed to be more dominant in his victory over Pope. I felt more like Pope made a mistake. Morgan should have been on commentary and Bellatore’s CEO shouldn’t have been on this week, but last week.

Kid Kash & Jessee Sauronson…. How did Kid Kash get a title shot? I would have loved to see Kash swerve Jessee and say you signed this match to face me & Austin Aries vs you. Not a 3 way-not for the title. Just stacking the odds against Jessee.

Chris Daniels…. wow they shouldn’t have had Bellatore’s CEO doing commentary. He took away from the match. Daniels vs AJ was great, but if AJ is going for the title, he should have gone over clean. Then RVD can pick up the scraps for revenge from the earlier week… or just don’t have it. There’s no build at this point that would draw interest more than you will see Daniels vs RVD.

6 Man Tag…. You know I can’t complain too much about this. Abyss went over Stiener. That makes Abyss look strong when he’s recently broken away from Immortal and the weak link Stiener gets pinned. Nothing wrong here. Hot match.

Main event… Should have been #1 contender’s match to get the TNA shot at Roode. KAZ against AJ like I said before. Better yet, no DQ that way Roode can be at ringside and throw in KAZ or AJ if they go to the outside. Fight for his amusement! Just like he did. The gold is sweet guys! AJ can go over, then send Roode packing and shake KAZ’s hand.

Just my thoughts….

IN CONCLUSION
James Storm comes back from the concussion. Gets screwed out of any kind of rematch. Roode pays Immortal to be his goon squad.
Roode defends against Hardy, Anderson, RVD, AJ.

James Storm winning the TNA title (2 stars with 1 stone)

A lot of people seem befuddled on why James Storm won the TNA title and not Roode. I think I understand why they gave the title to Storm. To garner more interest in Roode vs Storm and hopefully make 2 guys while Angle is injured.

Let’s say with Roode… that month long push (BFG series doesn’t count as a push) made him a B+ or A- guy. If he won the belt he’d be A+ and Storm would be a C. Storm winning the belt made him go from C to lets say B-. With work they’ll make him a B+ or A-. So you still have a B+ and B- But at least you don’t have a pair of Cs anymore…
Another thing with the bait and switch of Storm as champion is the simple fact that Storm never went through Fortune. So he can stay a face for a while and go through the faces… then become a heel and go through Fortune one by one leading to Roode vs James Storm in a year.

Bobby Roode needs to win the TNA title tonight (and not later)

With this amount of push Bobby NEEDS the to win the TNA title tonight at Bound for Glory. If he doesn’t win the title, it will be another 5 or 10 years before fans take seriously and that is lost money. If its not tonight and then he gets it next month then it will be meh. Then it won’t mean anything. People would rather see him win the TNA title tonight and have a rematch instead of a not winning the championship tonight followed by a him winning next month.

That meh is a deflation of the crowd and their willingness to pay to see him. He needs to look strong and by strong I mean a clean pinfall without any dirt such as runins, cheating or whatever. Kurt can cheat… he’s a heel.

He also needs his glory at the end THIS IS BOUND FOR GLORY. Meaning no post match beat downs. You can even have an evil glance from someone… just nothing that takes longer than 1 second. People will eat up an evil glance.

Let’s look at history like in WCW when Sting was screwed out of his big match against Hogan only to win the title a few months later. That was past everyone’s point of giving a damn. Ultimate Warrior came in and won the title with no loss of momentum. People pay to see momentum. Especially if there are 2 momentums going for a head to head collission course.

Bobby Roode vs Kurt Angle needs to be the main event of the pay-per-view. Bobby needs to be over the company politics between Hogan, Sting and Dixie. He needs to be above that celebration. He and THE TITLE need to be above it. By pushing him strong with him as your champion it will make your company look better. People want strength that’s why they’ve gotten behind Mark Henry after not wanting to see him for years. Strength and steam will push the promotion and make people want to see TNA, Bobby and the fresh matches he will bring to the main event picture.

Thoughts on TNA Impact (9-29-11)

The pretense of TNA Impact tonight was Hogan had an announcement to make. Unfortunately I don’t care. That’s not a draw to me or most people. Even though AJ vs Bobby Roode was the main event and they did lil segments here and there to hype it, I felt like that was still a back seat to Hogan’s announcement.

STING & BOBBY ROODE
HEAT: B-
STING: A
ROODE: B

This was more hype for Bobby Roode. This was great simply because Sting put heat on the match with Roode vs Angle. Kind of letting the world know Sting vs Hogan will not be the main event of Bound for Glory. It also looked good for Roode to get the rub from Sting. Lets the world know that Roode is the top baby face or will be… Angle came out, AJ came out, but didn’t add much to the segment.

#1 CONTENDER >> 5 MAN LADDER MATCH
HEAT: F
MATCH: C
FINISH: D

It was an ok match and could have used 5 extra minutes to be good. Austin Aries on commentary did a good job as a heel.

MEXICAN AMERICA vs INK INC
HEAT: C
MATCH: F+
FINISH: A
MEXICAN AMERICA: A
INK INC: C

This wasn’t a match, it was the destruction of Ink Inc. I liked this, because it put over Mexican America who really need it.

JARRETT w/ KAREN & KAZ w/ TRACI
HEAT: B
JARRETT: A
KAZ: D

Two men with their real life wives with them. This was a great segment complete with a pull apart.

TARA vs MADISSON RAYNE
HEAT: C
MATCH: C
FINISH: don’t even remember
RAYNE: A
TARA: C

Shockingly TNA revisited their history in a video package. It was good… But they can only do this once before it becomes beating a dead horse.

Rayne was all over the ref. It was greatly amusing and original, but they overdid it by the end.

DANIELS BACKSTAGE
DANIELS: B

Good, simple half minute segment to say that Daniels vs AJ will happen at Bound for Glory. Daniels is great as this weasel…

CRIMSON & JOE ANGLE
HEAT: C-
JOE: C
CRIMSON: C
MORGAN: C

Crimson is back from an injury at the hands of Joe… Joe cut a heel promo. Cut down the fans, cut down Crimson’s “streak.” Ends with a 50/50 brawl. Morgan ran out for the save…

POPE vs MR ANDERSON
HEAT: C
MATCH: C
FINISH: F
ANDERSON: C
POPE: C

Was this match face vs face? I couldn’t tell… one of the two men should have cut down the crowd or something… Devon’s kids are back in the crowd. Good for them.

I just fast forward through Anderson on the Mic. I know where he comes from. I know what his name is. Fans are actually chanting for Anderson… its not piped in. That has to mean something.

I don’t like Anderson, but he’s added more flair to his work in the past few weeks. He’s not as basic.

This match just turns into shit with distractions and interference. It would be one thing if a heel interfered but having 2 outside interferences felt like a bit much.

ROODE BACKSTAGE & AJ BACKSTAGE
Heat: D

Throughout the show both men have been backstage. Neither man is drawing heat to their match, but they’re pretty much selling the fact that it will be a real match. No friends.

POPE & DEVON ARGUEMENT BACKSTAGE
Heat: F
DEVON: A
POPE: C

This segment made little sense since TNA’s token black team have briefly been on the same page.

BOBBY ROODE VIDEO PACKAGE
Heat: C+

I really wish that Bobby had his own shirt instead of generic Impact shirts. This was all about Roode’s training and sacrifice. They had an interview with his wife and showed his kids. This is something that the Khali and Jinder angle could bennefit.

This goes to show that Roode is a normal guy, both in a good and bad way. Its good because it shows he’s real. He’s every man. Its bad where I think it deflated him by making him look so normal. Maybe less family more training….

BOBBY ROODE vs AJ STYLES
Heat: C
Match: B
AJ: A
ROODE: B-

To be honest, I’ve seen too much Bobby Roode over the last 3 weeks. My desire to see him is wavoring. But hopefully this is only temporary. He looks like HHH Jr and that’s probably a great thing. He has the look. He’s a safe guy. His promos have fire. But after these 3 weeks I’m not sure if he should be on top yet. Yet being the key word. Ready or not here he comes… That Bound for Glory was designed to get him ready, but I consider it a failure when Crimson was fake injured and some guys had 10 matches and others had 20.

I feel like I’ve seen 4 side headlock takeovers tonight.

There are AJ & Roode chats, which is good. They did a slow build to this match and picked their spots well. Roode has good quickness and good spring in his selling. Everything is very accurate that Roode does. AJ carried this match and made Roode look good. Roode looked good and made AJ look good. That’s how it should be.

I also think there are too many people hyping up Roode. You’re ready… you’re ready. I guess its better than hearing… you’ll never do it! or jobbing out the contender before the championship match. After the match the question is if AJ brought his best. That shouldn’t be a question. That shouldn’t do a statement. Fluffing up Roode makes me feel like Roode will doubt himself. In fact he looked like he was doubting himself. Its like constant reassurance makes for insecurity.

MAIN EVENT HULK HOGAN
Heat: A- (even though it was a face promo from a heel)
HOGAN: A

This is the main event… Hulk’s run is coming to a close… he should sign a WWE legends deal for $10,000 and just be done with it. It was a total face promo… for a heel. Uggg…. Hogan put over Fortune…. and said that he taught everyone he ever knew. Hogan retires… He gets misty. It was very good. He got shaky and announced next week he would be retiring.

Sting is in the back and burries Hogan. He’s done this before where only Sting sees through Hogan’s mist… well it never seems like Hogan is being disingenuous. Sting ruined this.

IN CONCLUSION
It was a good show. Sting put over Roode. Mexican America looked strong. Madisson Rayne is still a standout Knockout… Pope & Devon make no sense… and I almost forgot about the Jarretts and Kazarians.

Hogan’s promo was memorable… but Sting’s disbelief almost ruined it.
